Structural Design Engineer

Job Type: Independent Contractor / Freelance (Project-Based), with the potential to transition into a full-time role based on performance and project pipeline. Please note that transitioning to a full-time position requires working permanent California business hours (PST/PDT).

Working Hours

Contract Phase

  • Flexible, asynchronous production schedule. However, candidates must maintain designated availability during California business hours (PST/PDT) for real-time communication, project coordination, progress updates, and scheduled Zoom meetings. Prompt email responsiveness during the California workday is required.
Full-Time Phase (If Transitioned)
  • Standard California business hours (typically 8:00 AM–5:00 PM PST/PDT), equivalent to a graveyard shift in the Philippines.
Position Overview We are seeking an independent Structural Design Engineer based in the Philippines for a project-based contract engagement, with the opportunity to transition into a full-time position. This role is responsible for structural analysis, engineering calculations, and construction document production for residential and commercial projects located in California.

As this position works closely with our US-based team, candidates must be highly responsive via email and available for Zoom meetings during California business hours. Candidates with an established working relationship with a California-licensed Engineer of Record (EOR) who can review, sign, and stamp structural plans are highly preferred.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independent Project Delivery (Contract Phase): Manage your own workflow and schedule to deliver structural calculations and complete construction document plan sets on time.
  • Availability During California Business Hours: Maintain overlapping availability for project coordination, Zoom meetings, and urgent requests during California business hours.
  • Structural Analysis & Design: Perform structural analysis, modeling, and calculations for wood, steel, concrete, and masonry structures in compliance with California building codes.
  • Construction Document Production: Prepare, revise, and finalize structural construction documents, details, schedules, and plan sets using AutoCAD and/or Revit.
  • EOR Coordination: Coordinate with a California-licensed PE or SE to ensure timely engineering review and stamping while maintaining clear communication with the US team regarding project schedules.
Required Qualifications & Skills
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering.
  • Minimum of 3–4 years of experience working on US structural engineering projects, preferably California-based.
  • Existing working relationship with a California-licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or Structural Engineer (SE) who provides responsible-charge review and engineering stamps (highly preferred).
  • Strong understanding of gravity and lateral load design, wind loading, and seismic design (Seismic Design Categories D, E, and F) in accordance with the California Building Code (CBC), ASCE 7, IBC, and applicable material design standards (NDS, AISC, and ACI).
