About AI Training Work

AI training (also called data labeling or human feedback work) is the human effort that teaches AI models what good answers look like. Contributors annotate data, evaluate outputs, and craft reference responses that models learn from.

This role focuses on text-based model training: writing high-quality answers, evaluating candidate outputs, and documenting rationale so models and annotators have clear, reproducible benchmarks.

  • Directly influence model behavior by producing gold-standard answers and evaluation guidance.
  • Flexible, remote work suitable for academics and technical specialists who want impactful part-time work.

The Role

OpenTrain is hiring a contractor Computer Science Expert to produce authoritative responses to advanced CS questions, review data and solutions for accuracy, and create golden responses that serve as quality benchmarks.

You will work remotely with annotation leads and project managers to refine requirements, document rationale, and ensure consistent, defensible standards for model training and evaluation.

  • Employment type: Contractor, Part-time.
  • Time commitment: 20+ hours per week.
  • Work type: Remote, worldwide (English required).
  • Data type: Text. Label types: Text generation and evaluation/rating.

What You'll Do

  • Write accurate, well-explained answers to advanced computer science queries with clear, step-by-step reasoning.
  • Review CS data, questions, and proposed solutions for correctness, completeness, and alignment with best practices.
  • Develop thorough explanations and justifications across foundational and specialized CS topics.
  • Create golden responses that set quality benchmarks for future model outputs.
  • Document context, assumptions, and rationale to support interpretability and downstream annotation work.
  • Coordinate remotely with annotation leads and project managers to refine requirements and maintain quality.

Requirements

All listed requirements come from the role description and are necessary to perform the work at the expected standard.

  • PhD in Computer Science or a closely related field (required).
  • Ability to write precise, well-structured explanations for advanced computer science concepts.
  • Experience developing, reviewing, or publishing scientific, technical, or educational CS materials.
  • Familiarity with multiple CS sub-disciplines (algorithms, systems, AI/ML, databases, networks, security, etc.).
  • Exceptional attention to detail and analytical rigor.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

Who Should Apply

This role is a great fit for academics, researchers, or senior practitioners who hold a PhD in CS and want to apply their expertise to improve AI systems on a part-time, remote basis.

Although labeled entry-level for the AI-training industry, the role expects domain expertise and the ability to produce publishable-quality explanations and review work.

  • Ideal if you enjoy clear technical writing, peer review, and defining rigorous benchmarks.
  • Good fit for people seeking flexible, impactful contract work that shapes model behavior.

Compensation, How It Works, and Next Steps

Pay is hourly: USD $80–$90 per hour, billed as a contractor. This is a part-time, 20+ hours/week engagement and is open worldwide for English speakers.

Typical workflow includes receiving question sets, drafting golden responses, rating or reviewing candidate answers, and documenting rationale for annotation teams. You will coordinate with project leads to iterate on standards and deliverables.

To apply, create an OpenTrain account and submit your profile and relevant work samples. OpenTrain manages contracting and project coordination so contributors can focus on high-quality technical work.
