Creature Supervisor – ILM London

ILM London, part of Disney, is hiring a Creature Supervisor to join its VFX pipeline team in London, UK. This role sits within the Creature FX and rigging department, where the supervisor leads a team of Creature TDs through the full arc of a show, from pipeline setup and hero rigging to simulation delivery across flesh, hair, muscle, cloth, and rigid body systems. It suits an experienced rigging or CFX lead who has already worked at a senior level on feature film production or high-end VFX projects and is ready to own both the technical and creative direction of a creature team.

About the Role

The Creature Supervisor operates across ILM's show-to-show structure, meaning you are embedded in production from early pipeline decisions through to shot delivery, working closely with the CG Supervisor and Production Manager to keep creature work on schedule and on brief. Day to day, this means reviewing TD shotwork, making aesthetic calls, troubleshooting rigging issues that surface across disciplines, and writing tools or scripts to keep the VFX pipeline moving. Previous ILM experience is considered a strong advantage, and the role is hybrid with two days per week on-site in London.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up and maintain the creature TD pipeline on a per-show basis, including writing tools, establishing hero rigging standards, and configuring simulation systems where required.
  • Run and supervise simulations across flesh, hair, muscle, cloth, and rigid body systems, stepping in at shot level when artist support is needed.
  • Review creature TD shotwork and provide specific, constructive feedback that maintains aesthetic consistency and technical continuity across the show.
  • Bid, schedule, and cast shotwork in partnership with the CG Supervisor and Production Manager, with estimates that directly inform hiring decisions.
  • Troubleshoot creature rigging problems raised by artists in modeling, texture, and animation, acting as a cross-discipline technical resource.
  • Mentor junior and newly hired Creature TDs, and participate in the hiring process for the creature team.

What You Bring

  • Proven leadership experience on a VFX film or CG animated project, with a background in Maya rigging and Houdini simulation setup for advanced hero assets.
  • Expertise in Maya and Houdini, with Python scripting proficiency and working knowledge of Linux.
  • Experience producing CG characters and creatures for visual effects, including corrective sculpting, anatomy, and skinning.
  • A degree in computer graphics, fine arts, design, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience in the VFX pipeline.
  • Basic proficiency in a secondary discipline such as modeling, texture, TD, or animation is a bonus.

Why This Role

ILM is one of the most established visual effects studios in the industry, with a London facility that works across major feature film production and streaming projects at the highest level. The Creature Supervisor position here carries genuine scope, with authority over pipeline decisions, hiring input, and the creative direction of creature work across shows. The application deadline for this role is 23rd July 2026.
