Position Summary The Senior Bookkeeper is responsible for delivering high-quality bookkeeping and payroll services to a diverse portfolio of clients across various industries. This role requires excellent attention to detail, strong knowledge of Australian taxation and payroll obligations, and the ability to identify and resolve accounting discrepancies. The Senior Bookkeeper also provides administrative support for client onboarding and professional correspondence. Key Responsibilities Bookkeeping - Perform end-to-end bookkeeping services for a portfolio of clients. - Process and accurately allocate financial transactions within accounting software (primarily Xero and MYOB). - Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, loan accounts, and other balance sheet accounts. - Process payroll in accordance with relevant legislation, awards, and employment agreements. - Manage payroll reporting obligations, including Single Touch Payroll (STP), PAYG withholding, and superannuation. - Set up new Xero files, including chart of accounts, bank feeds, payroll settings, and client-specific configurations. - Reconcile ATO integrated client accounts, including: - Goods and Services Tax (GST) - PAYG Withholding - Income Tax - Review Profit and Loss Statements and Balance Sheets to identify inconsistencies, coding errors, unreconciled balances, and other accounting issues. - Investigate and correct bookkeeping errors to ensure accurate financial reporting. - Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records and working papers. Administration - Prepare engagement letters and onboarding documentation for new clients. - Prepare ethics letters and professional clearance requests to previous accountants. - Assist with the onboarding of new clients into the practice management and accounting systems. - Maintain electronic client files and ensure documentation is complete and accurately recorded. - Support accountants with administrative tasks relating to bookkeeping and compliance engagements. Skills and Experience Essential - Minimum 5 years' bookkeeping experience in a public accounting or bookkeeping practice. - Advanced knowledge of Xero. - Strong understanding of Australian GST, BAS, PAYG withholding, payroll, and ATO compliance requirements. - Experience processing payroll for multiple clients. - High level of accuracy and attention to detail. - Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. - Excellent written and verbal communication skills. - Ability to manage multiple clients and competing deadlines. - Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel. Desirable - Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping, Diploma of Accounting, or equivalent qualification. - Experience working within a public accounting practice.
