Job Description

We are looking for multi-skilled Writer/Editor who can hit the ground running while covering news for the Philippines and Canada on different platforms website, newspaper and social media - sharing political events, community interest stories and/or lighthearted features with a good sense of what makes an interesting angle to a story, to juggle all the moving parts of publications. You will plan, coordinate, review and edit content.

As an Editor, you will write articles, feature stories, and investigative pieces. Mirroring different communities, we are seeking diverse content: diversity of thought, experiences, culture, and more. You will contribute copy for our print, social media and website, such as local news, nonprofit and business coverage, lifestyle and leisure, travel and tourism, and local arts and culture.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate online or print publishing cycle and manage content areas
  • Set publication standards and establish goals and expectations
  • Suggest stories and generate headline ideas in alignment with targeted audiences preferences
  • Oversee layout (artwork, design, photography) and check content for accuracy and errors
  • Proofread, edit and improve stories or pieces
  • Cooperate and liaise with designers, photographers, advertising reps, writers, artists etc.
  • Comply with media law and ethical guidelines
  • Within the Philippines, willing to travel, track people down, conduct interviews, show up at the important scenes, as well as travel to any place necessary to research and get the details of the stories you are presenting
  • Perform research by reading other articles or collecting own primary sources.
  • Organize ideas and use compelling language to turn the idea into a complete sensible article.
  • Must be organized and able to meet daily deadlines
  • Prioritize story treatment across a variety of platforms, from our linear broadcasts to our streaming services, as well as social media and our website
  • Build relationships with various sources in the community and media contacts to ensure they have an accurate stream of information

Qualifications:

  • Proven working experience as an Editor
  • Bachelors Degree in Communications or Journalism
  • Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills
  • Wordpress news publishing experience is a must
  • Can write about political events, community interest stories, lighthearted features or any categories
  • Writes, edits and publishes news articles
  • Excellent journalism and writing skills are essential
  • Hands on experience with MS Office and Adobe Photoshop, Canva or Adobe Express
  • Social media publishing experience
  • Some familiarity with SEO best practices

Nice to have:

  • Familiarity with website analytics
  • Podcasting experience
  • Experience editing short videos for social (IG stories, Tiktok, Youtube Shorts etc.)
  • Advanced social media management or marketing experience
